Illustrator Sunday: J.C. Leyendecker (Part Two)
I took your silence as ‘no one would mind’.
Scanned from the Culter & Culter J.C. Leyendecker book.
Isn’t this that guy that drew his partner into most of his images?
Yes! His partner was
Charles Beach, and he modeled for a lot of JC’s pieces. It’s widely accepted he was the original model for the Arrow Collar Man, a fictional character advertising Arrow Collars and one of Leyendecker’s most successful campaigns. They were together for around 50 years, right until JC’s death in 1951.
Don’t forget Beach was an Englishman who went on to represent the ideal of American male beauty. (take that, yanks)
