My science literacy is insufficient to parse this article, but it is about gene therapy for transgender patients as an alternative to hormone replacement therapy. Somebody smarter than me, tell me when I can stop sticking myself with needles and just download the cells to do the hormoning for me.
@alder-knight
This paper is about cell fates– how the embryo determines whether to develop testes or ovaries during early development. It has little bearing on full-grown people. In this case, XY females is referring to people with a Y chromosome who never developed testes.
Sorry =(
thank you! I really appreciate you reading through it cuz I can’t figure out how to make it mean what I thought it was supposed to mean, and this is vindicating.
the person who sent it to me just replied to my “???” with the following:
The short version is this: they have done things which, with one injection, could cause the body to change sex, and grow different endocrine organs. This means people wouldn’t need hormone therapy anymore, or any of the side effects that go with it.
It’s only been done in mice, but it seems that it would extend to the human organism as well.
…which seems like a stretch, as compared to the contents of the article itself?? but I didn’t know enough to side-eye properly
like… it sounds like it only works in theory and even then only on folks who are already technically intersex? (big apologies if I am using that wrong)
