“I’m wearing Camper x Eckhaus Latta shoes, pants made by myself, an altered BCBG top, and an assortment of theatre rings and earrings. I’m inspired by various concepts, for example, today I was inspired by craftiness and wanted to portray that by wearing lots of wovens, the exposed material looks. I’ve been obsessed with Matty Bovan and Sanchez Kane for the past few years. This week I’ve developed a keen interest in makeup – so I’ve been looking at Pat McGrath’s makeup for John Galliano’s DIOR and blushed looks in older academic paintings.”

China’s netizens are all in a twitter over the account of a carpenter who was commissioned to make a cinnabar red high-backed chair with the finials at the top to be “in the shape of dragons’ heads” (chéng lóngtóu 成龍頭).  Unfortunately, he misinterpreted the directions to mean “[in the shape of] Jackie Chan’s head” (“Chénglóng tóu 成龍頭”).

(via Language Log » Reanalysis, Jackie Chan edition)

LMAO ok so to elaborate on this absolute gem, notice how the characters provided for “in the shape of dragons’ heads” and “[in the shape of] Jackie Chan’s head” are identical? That wasn’t a typo.

The thing you need to understand about Chinese names is that they all have meaning. And I don’t mean that in the sense of “if you trace the etymology back through two languages it has its roots in a Hebrew phrase that means “God is my ____” that many Western names have. I mean that in the sense of “almost all of these words are still in regular use today and my parents very literally named me “pretty [and] wise” in Chinese.

(Sidenote: This is why we get annoyed at made-up ‘Chinese’ names that just pull two random vaguely Chinese-sounding syllables together. It is blindingly obvious when it’s not a real name).

(chéng) means “to become”, “to turn into”. 龍 (lóng)

is “dragon”. Thus, Jackie Chan’s Chinese stage name,

成龍 (Chénglóng), literally means “become dragon”. (頭 (tóu), of course, means “head”)

(Further sidenote: This is actually a bit of a pun/reference. Specifically, it is a reference to Bruce Lee, whose stage name was 小龍 (Xiǎolóng), or, “Little dragon”. So Jackie’s chosen stage name means both “become dragon”, and “become [like] Bruce Lee”)

The other thing you need to know about Chinese is that we don’t put spaces between terms in written text.

What all this means is that the way you’d write “[carve] into dragon heads” can be identical to the way you’d write “[carve] Jackie Chan’s head”, and literally the only difference would be where you pause when you vocalise it: before lóngtóu, or after chénglóng. XD

i think the chair turned out great

Announcements & Updates

pillowfort-io:

Hello everyone! So much has happened over the last
week and we want to keep you all updated with what’s going to be
happening over the next few weeks.

Invites
– We’re sending out the rest of our invitations today for payments that
were submitted between Dec 4 at 3:45 PM PST and Dec 5th at midnight
PST
. If you sent a payment during that time period or earlier but don’t
receive your invitation by later today, then a) check your spam folder! Yahoo and
Hotmail in particular seem to like to filter our automated emails as
spam, and then b) email us at info@pillowfort.io
if you still haven’t gotten your invite. If you sent a payment after
Dec 5th at midnight PST then we are aiming to send out your invite later
this week.

Pillowfort Now Has Over 25,000 Users!
To put this in perspective, at the beginning of this year we had only
4,000. The positive thing about the recent influx of new users is that
the registration payments have given us more funding for developers and
other expenses, which will result in a more robust infrastructure for
the site in the near future. The unfortunate result in the meantime is
slower load times as the site deals with the unprecedented amount of
traffic. We realize that many users are coming to the site as an
alternative to Tumblr, and we certainly hope that we can meet those
expectations soon! Right now, Pillowfort is still a small team, and we
hadn’t expected to have such a huge influx of potential users arrive on
our doorstep all at once, so it will take us a little time to catch up.
But rest assured we are working as hard as we can.

PR Assistant
– Pillowfort is looking for a part-time public relations assistant to
help us manage our communications with all our new and upcoming users!
This person will primarily be responsible for helping us respond to
inquiries through our social media accounts and email, and drafting our
outreach materials. Pay will be around $15/hr and it is best if you live
in the Austin, TX area. Please contact us at info@pillowfort.io if you’re interested.

There’s a lot to unpack here.
+the flexibility to get in that pose
+the balance to stay on the skateboard
+the strength to pull back a bowstring with your toes
+the dexterity to hit a target while moving
+the coordination… not hand-eye, but foot-eye
…I don’t know what to do with these things now that I’ve unpacked them…

Now come to grips with the utter fear and respect this person deserves
